Fisher-Price Zen Collection Cradle Swing Reviews

Review by Vano Chu:
I will agree with the previous reviewer that the assembly instructions leave a bit to be desired. In particular:

1. The infant seat legs can be installed backwards (and it looks like it would take a screwdriver plus a lot of elbow grease to ease the locking “tabs” back out to separate the parts again — I was lucky and guessed right the first time)

2. There’s some white foam wrapped around the inner support bars of the seat frame that have a “do not cut” sticker on them. That does NOT mean “find some other way to remove this packing material besides cutting it off”.. those styrofoam pads are supposed to STAY on the bars (as cushioning since they are right next to the baby under the seat material), so DO NOT REMOVE THEM at all. The tubes are white (i.e. don’t match the rest of the swing) which makes it look as if they don’t belong in the assembled product at first, so it would be easy to mistakenly rip them off in the initial frenzy of unpacking.

3. Yes, the mobile plug has 3 prongs and the socket has 4, but push firmly and everything snaps together fine. The mismatch prevents the mobile from ever coming back out. Fortunately, you can’t accidentally install this part backwards. :-)

As for the swing itself, it’s great! I didn’t think we’d really use the removable infant-seat feature, but it comes in really handy: when kiddo has a wet diaper, I can just pick up the entire chair off the swing (with baby strapped into it), walk to the room with the changing table, and put him down while prepping the wipes and new diaper. The built-in, foldover blankets are a nice touch. The “Zen” music is just new-agey versions of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and a few classic pieces, but is still less jarring than standard baby-gear music.

Switching the swing direction from side-to-side to fore-aft direction is best done by picking up the infant seat out of the socket, rotating it, and then reseating it. It is possible to rotate the chair without picking it up, but it takes a fair amount of force and would be quite jarring to any child who was actually seated in the chair during that operation.

The swinging action is smooth and quiet. There’s just the tiniest bit of sway in the frame itself with each swing because of the slight gap between the legs and the sockets in the motor housing where they snap in. It doesn’t bother me (i.e. there’s no accompanying rattling noise and the swing is still rock-solid), and could probably easily be remedied by shimming the gap with some paper.

The mobile doesn’t move on its own. And the stripe pattern on the parasols is not reproduced on the bottom which seems a bit silly to me. (i.e. you and I see a high-contrast pattern from the top, but the baby just sees a uniform brown disc of plastic from beneath — whose visual acuity is supposed to be stimulated here anyway?) It is nice that the mobile swings out of the way. Getting the baby in and out of the swing is a breeze.

Overall, very happy with this purchase. The design, materials and operation are solid. I withhold one star because the assembly instructions really don’t cut it.

Review by emory2001:
I was severely disappointed in this swing at first, but after a few fixes, it’s much better. I’ve included my original review with updates:

1. The seat base has a strap that isn’t shown in the instruction diagrams, so you don’t know whether that is the front or the back of the seat base . . . until you’ve already attached it to the swing base and are putting the rest of it together. Then, you find out that strap goes in the back (this will make sense when you put it together – put the strap in the back). Not a big deal, except that I’ve already attached it to the swing base, and it turns out the huge orange Warnings are now at the front of my once-beautiful, most-expensive-on-the-market swing . . . and once you click these pieces together, IT’S PERMANENT, so I can’t turn it around. I don’t even know why screws are included, because even after I removed them, this sucker doesn’t come apart. So I can’t put the huge orange Warnings facing the back (I only need to read them once, I don’t need them in my face forever). If anyone finds a remedy for this, please feel free to describe it in the comments.

UPDATE: Many thanks to the reviewer who recommended acetone nail polish to remove the print. Worked like a charm!

2. When you go to attach the toy bar, it has 4 prongs. The opening that it’s supposed to go into has 3 divets. It won’t go in. So there’s a big hole at the top of the swing where the toy bar is supposed to go.

UPDATE: Finally got it to go in after about eight tries.

3. I pre-ordered this swing before it was released and it just arrived today. Already, I’m upset to see that the immediate post-release price is less than what I paid for it. That’s what we get for giving Fisher Price early sales and being their guinea pigs on finding out if the thing works??

UPDATE: Many thanks to the commenter about the Amazon refund on price difference. I contacted Amazon and they refunded me the difference.

There are some great things about it:

1. Great colors and luxurious fabric.

2. The seat rotates, so baby can swing front-back or side-to-side.

3. The seat comes off the swing, so it can also be a regular portable baby seat (it’s not a bouncy though).

4. Adjustable swing speed, volume control, and choice of sounds.

Fisher-Price Infant To Toddler Swing in Red Reviews

Review by dennispsmith:
I first bought this swing 8 years ago when my nephew turned 1. He LOVED it, it was his best birthday gift. Since then, it has become our standard one-year-old gift. I’ve given it to dozens of children and received rave reviews every time. When a friend bought this for my son’s first birthday, we were thrilled. He and his friends are now nearly four and still like to swing in it even though they have mastered the big-boy swing. My one-year-old will sit in it watching the big kids play in the garden and he is a mover – does not like to sit still at all. It is also perfect on days when the ground is too wet to crawl around (which seems like everyday lately).

By the way, I read the ‘upside down’ post. I was concerned and tried to turn mine upside down without a child in it and the ropes are balanced that I could not turn it even empty. That family may have had defective ropes or it was installed improperly…

Review by Julie Lewis:
My daughter is 5 months and loves this swing. We added it to the swingset we have. It installs easy. It is easy to get her in and out of. She looks comfortable in it. It has a nice buckle and it has a tray in front for snacks or toys. It reclines back which is nice since she can’t sit up straight yet. I highly recommend this swing. My swingset came with a bucket swing, which is too big for her. I looked at several other swings, and I am pleased with this one!

Review by Kristin L. Moore:
I ordered this swing (actually two of them) to replace my step 2 swings that broke. The instructions were quite easy to follow. My kids love them. They are much better than the step 2 swings that came with the swing set. The chains are covered so they don’t hurt the kids hands. They won’t break like my step 2 swings did. I would highly reccomend these swings to anyone looking to buy a swing for their swing set.

Review by John Howard:
We purchased this swing for my son a month or so ago. my son was swinging and it snapped off where the chain connects to the seat in mid air. It made for a horrific accident and he is now scarred for life, both physically and emotionally. weight limit says 115, my son is weighs only 65. If you care about your kids safety, dont buy this swing!!!

Fisher-Price Papasan Cradle Swing – Starlight Purple Reviews

Review by cmd0430:
I had originally bought the Graco 6-speed swing, but unfortunately, the motor burned out on it after only two months of use. But that’s fine, because it gave me an excuse to go buy the Baby Papasan Cradle Swing!

Things I love about this swing are:

1) The motor is EXTREMELY quiet. As mentioned previously, I had the Graco 6-speed swing, and the “clunk click clunk click” noise it made was unnerving. The Papasan Swing motor is so quiet that I can barely hear that it’s even on!

2) The mobile is soooo cute! Not only does the whole thing rotate, but each individual leaf and bird/bug actually moves, too! The leaves flap up and down, and the bird/bugs rotate and spin, as if they are actually flying! My baby coos at the mobile, and I think she likes the shiny mirror on the underside of the mobile.

3) The seat seems like it is very comfortable for my baby. I call it the “Celeste Nest” because it looks so comfy and soft! It is nice and big and has plenty of room for her to spread out in it when she falls asleep. It even has a nice pillow so her head doesn’t roll around.

4) It has a completely removable toy tray. This is nice, because my baby sometimes gets “mad” at the toy tray because she’s overstimulated and just wants to sleep. I can take it out of her way so she can get comfy to take a nice long snooze.

5) Volume control dial for the music–need I say anything more?!?

6) And, of course, the option to either have your baby swing straight ahead or from side to side (cradle) is very nice! The cradle swinging option really soothes my baby nicely.

My minor gripes about the swing are:

1) The mobile and music shut off automatically after seven minutes. So every seven minutes, I have to get up and press the reset button to start it going again. Whatever happened to the PARENTS getting to decide when to turn the music and mobile off?

2) The big puffy headrest is nice, but it’s not removeable. It is a little too puffy and restraining, and it bends my baby’s ears forward. She also has a hard time turning her head, because it is so snug to her face. This frustrates her and she starts crying, because my baby loves to be able to look around and see what’s going on.

3) The seat only has two positions–reclined or upright. When I put the seat in the one and only upright position, it still doesn’t sit my baby up very much.

4) The toys on the toy tray are kind of lame–there are two plastic arched bars that each have two plastic toys on them (brightly colored flowers and bees). My baby likes this just ok, since they don’t rattle or make noise, she loses interest in them fast. Then there is the turtle rattle toy in the center. It is attached by a strap that is attached to the underside of the toy tray. My baby inevitably drops this toy in her lap over and over, each time requiring me to dig it out of her lap and position it back in its spot on the tray. I wish the rattle toy was mounted onto the top of the toy tray so she could bat at it without dropping it. Hey, at least this swing comes with toys on the toy tray, unlike the Graco 6-speed model!

All in all, this is a really great swing. The color scheme is neutral and should match any decor. Yes, the swing is pretty expensive, but I think for the quality of the swing, it is worth it.

Review by Mom2LeLeNRyRy:
Well just like the Baby Papasan bouncer, this was our daughters second swing. She also has the Ocen Wonders swing and adores it.

We get this one because she has some minor breathing problems and sleep better in an upright type poistion. She would sleep in the fish swing but not for long. It was like it restricted her movement and she just couldn’t get confortable. So when we say this one, we decided to bitethe bullet and get another swing.

But, it has been a great buy. She will sleep in this thing for hours because the seat is wider and less confining. Plus it is so comfy! Just like our Papasan. It has all the same great features as the fish swing. Multiple speeds, multiple sound settings, mobile, light display, removable tray with toys, recline, and push button changing from cradle to regular swing.

I would be hard pressed to pick between the two swings because she rests so much better in the Papasan but she plays longer in the Ocean Wonders. Luckily we had the room and the gift cards to have both. Maybe Fisher Price will come up with some sort of combo model by the time our next kid gets here! :o )

Once our baby out grew the battery operated swing, we got this one for the porch. It has been a big hit! She loves the swinging motion and can enjoy the fresh air, watch the birds, while we all relax on the deck. We have even taken it on camping trips, attaching it to a tree limb. The only downside is that you have to keep it going manually.

Review by Beth Cholette:
I’ve bought this swing twice now, both times as a birthday gift for a one-year old niece/nephew. The kids are crazy about this swing–once they go in, they never want to get out! The swing is made from sturdy plastic that is molded into one piece; it’s very easy to lift a child in and out of it, and there is an attached belt for safety. The swing nicely accomodates a one-year old child but slightly younger and a bit older would probably work too (the instructions indicate it holds up to 30 pounds). One minor issue is that you might need to obtain extra rope/chain in order to hang the swing properly–and you may have some trouble getting it straight–but overall, this a great gift that kids really enjoy.
