Gerber 12-Pack Flatfold Birdseye Cloth Diapers – White Reviews

Review by History_of_Art_Geek: A friend recommended I register for these although she knew I was planning to use disposable diapers. I accidentally registered for the diapers with the absorbent centerfold, and fortunately, received these. They are large – 27″x 27″ square and are essential for baby care. I still use them every day and my son is almost a year old. I used them to line his cradle and changing-table when he was first born and going through many diapers a day. They work great as burp cloths, and are superb for wiping up other food messes. Additionally, I found they work as a light blanket during the summer months. Extremely durable, fold-up rather small for travel, and launder well. 101 uses, I love them!

Review by M. F. Green: When I received these at my baby shower, I thought “What is this?…slightly cheap seeming diapers?” When I brought Baby home I soon saw how practical they are. Thin, yes! But simply fold them in half and it will take point-blank projectile vomits without any problem. We use them ALL the time, lifesavers really. Great for wiping drooly little chins and messy little hands. I give them now as shower gifts….the workhorse of the nursery. I am using my first set with baby #2.

bumGenius One-Size Cloth Diaper Twilight Reviews

Review by TNCorgiLover: These diapers are fabulous! I have the bumGenius 2.0 (paid .95) I thought the adjustable sizing would case the diaper to leak when my child was small, but it didn’t. These diapers have worked great and not leaked even as we have changed sizes (up to 17 lbs). The leg openings are snug, but do not leave marks. There is also elastic in the back of the diaper, which has resulted in no “up the back” accidents.

I personally prefer the velcro tabs over the snaps that are on the Fuzzi Bunz diapers. The velcro makes it easier to fit the diaper, especially if your child is moving around. During the day, I use only one insert with the diaper and have not had an issue with leaks. To insure that I did not have leaks with the Fuzzi Bunz, I had to use 2 inserts. The Bum-Ware diapers completely soaked through.

The fleece interior of the Fuzzi Bunz was softer than the bumGenius material, but bumGenius was still much softer than the BumWare diapers and all disposables.

One negative is that the bumGenius is only available in a very limited number of colors and no prints. Happy Heiny’s has a much wider selection of colors and some very cute prints. I have not used #1 Rated Diaper Happy Heiny’s Pocket Diaper with Free Insert to comment on the quality.

All of my bumGenius diapers are colored and I have had them a couple of months. So far, the colors have stayed true and not faded. The diapers have washed well in that neither the diapers nor the liners have stained. I am very conscious about using the velcro tabs before washing them, so I have not had a problem with the diapers sticking together and creating a snake.

Overall bumGenius is my favorites by far! I like bumGenius AIO’s because of the convenience, but the ability to modify the diaper size as my child grows makes more sense financially than having to purchase new diapers.

Updated: April 8, 2008

Below I have specifically addressed some of the issues expressed in other reviews with my personal experience.

Length of time owned – over a year and used daily

Size – 24 lbs they still fit great

Fraying tabs – I have one diaper where the tabs have frayed a little, but not enough to impact the function of the tabs.

Piling – All of my tabs have some degree of piling next to the Velcro. It is not pretty, but you can not see it when the diaper is on the baby. It has not impacted function.

Colors fading – No colors have faded. My stash includes multiple pinks, yellows and whites. I also have a blue and one green. The whites are dingy/grayish. I only wash in cold and hot water might help resolve this problem, but I do not recommend purchasing the white color.

Elastic around the legs and back – I have not had ANY elastics break or stretch on any diaper. I do wash my diapers on the gentle cycle.

Suedecloth lining – For my baby the fleece lining of the Fuzzi Bunz caused diaper rash. For us, the suedecloth lining has worked better. However, I have friend who loves the fleece lining. It probably depends upon your baby’s skin as to which will suit you best.

Snaps vs. Velcro – I prefer the velcro better because I feel like you can adjust the diaper to fit your baby better and it is faster with a moving toddler. My snap experience has only been with Fuzzi Bunz not with Mommy’s Touch One-size Snap All in One – Cloth Diaper, which I have been told is more adaptable.

Bulky – Yes they are bulky. In some pants/outfits you may need to go up a size to accommodate the size of the diaper.

Odors – this can happen to any cloth diaper. I have found the longer they sit unwashed the more likely they will hold odors. At times some of my diapers have held odors, but not the point that they have required stripping. The odor has subsided with subsequent normal washings. However, the dirty inserts must always be removed from the diaper (can be gross) or they will not get clean. I use All Free and Clear, which does contain an optical brightener (this is against Mfg recommendations). I have not tried the Flushable Diaper Liners that were mentioned, but they might help too.

Current opinion: Still love them!!! So much so that in Dec. I added some 3.0s (paid .95) and a bumGenuis wet bag. The 3.0s are even better! The biggest drawback is the price, but they are worth it.

UPDATE Dec.7 2008

30lbs still fit

Leaks: No problems with diapers leaking. I don’t know if this has contributed to their longevity in this area, but I line dry the covers and put the inserts in the dryer.

Fraying tabs: A couple of tabs have fraying, but not enough to impact functionality

Colors: pink has faded slightly; white looks dingy/grayish; yellow, blue and green still look true

Odors: In the past few of months, the diapers have started holding odors. I called Cotton Babies and was advised to wash them with 1/4 of a cup of bleach in your hot wash routine once a month. I now use bleach on the inserts about once a month. However, I do not use bleach on the covers that often.

Elastics: In the past couple of months, several of the elastics have lost their elasticity. I called Cotton Babies and after a few questions I was told that the problem was likely caused because I had switched to 7th Generation detergent. I was told that the diaper covers have a year warranty, but all of mine that had problems were outside the warranty time frame. The representative did email instructions on how to replace the elastics. I have not attempted this yet, so I can comment on the process. She also sent me a list of approved detergents. For us, both the odor and elastic issues started appearing about a month after switching detergents to 7th Generation. We have gone back to All Free and Clear now.

Stripping: The bumGenuis website specifically says not to use vinegar or baking soda on the diapers, which is the most common way to strip cloth diapers. It might be ok with the inserts, but I definitely would not use it on the covers as it would probably void your warranty. These are the instructions sent to me for stripping when I contacted Cottonbabies about my issues:

For leaking issues: 1. Wash once in hot water with Dawn liquid dish detergent in the original blue formula (yes, it must be Dawn). Use one tablespoon for regular top loaders and one teaspoon for high efficiency machines.

2. Do two additional hot water washes with no detergent, just clear water.

For smell issues:

1. Wash inserts once in hot water with Dawn liquid dish detergent in the original blue formula (yes, it must be Dawn). Use one teaspoon for high efficiency machines or one tablespoon with a regular machine. Use ¾ cup of chlorine bleach for a top loader and ½ cup for a high efficiency machine.

2. Do two additional hot water washes with no detergent, just clear water.

3. Normally, covers do not hold odors as inserts can, however, you may strip them using the instructions that apply for leaking issues.

Current opinion: I still love these diapers and I want some of the new colors! I don’t like that I am going to have to repair the elastics, but I still feel they are cheaper and healthier than disposables.

Review by Shirleen Rodrigues: These diapers are “genius” — for so many reasons. One size makes them very economically attractive. My daughter is growing so fast she is out of the sized diapers so quickly and at average a diaper this gets painful financially. These diapers are very well made, user friendly and most importantly keep the runny poops in! They fit snug and cosy, clean up nicely and don’t leave nasty red marks around her legs. I’ve tried prefolds and diaper covers(Bummis Whisper light) as well as Happy Heinys pocket diapers. I found the BumGenius by far superior.

Gerber 12-Pack Prefold Birdseye 3-Ply Cloth Diapers with Padding – White Reviews

Review by Megan Black: These diapers are lousy for diapering. The moisture wicks from end to end, and they absorb very little. The Gerber diaper service quality flatweave are better, while the chinese prefolds bought online are better still. They do make decent burp cloths, and are fine for washing cars.

Review by : These diapers leave much to be desired. They have pilled after less than 10 washings. The absorbancy is ok. They are very large and bulky and probably won’t fit a baby well until s/he is at least 20 pounds. You would be better off finding a different brand.

Gerber Brand 6 Pack Prefold Birdseye Organic Diaper, White Reviews

Review by Christine: I did a side by side comparison of these Gerber organic diapers and the Gerber premium prefold cloth diapers which are also quite popular by purchasing a 6-pack of each, for the same price.

I washed them all in a regular load of whites with regular detergent and no fabric softener, and dried them on medium. These came out the winner in my book, mostly because even without the assistance of fabric softener, there came out far softer than the premium prefolds. After being dried, they took on a bubbly, muslin-like appearance, where the premiums were crisp, solid and flat. Its probably a matter of preference what you like and what you intend to use these multi-purpose cloths for.

On the downside, these shrunk slightly more than the other Gerbers, and are now an inch smaller on each side. They were still plenty large enough to get the job done and are no means as small as a washcloth, etc.

To me, if you love instant softness and a looser weave, get these. If you like sturdy, high thread count and a thick uniform cloth, get the Gerber premium prefolds.

Review by M. Becton: Our daughter spits up at every feeding/burp. I have a slew of non-diaper burp cloths. These are by far the most absorbent, softest (once washed) and fold the smallest to fit in the diaper bag.

I also have non-organic Gerber diapers with extra padding in the middle. They are good but I prefer these since they are just as absorbent and less bulky.

Bottom Line:

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I read all the comments about these diapers, and I am amazed at how many people have complaints about their quality as a diaper.

I have triplets, and my husband and I are using these for our diapering. The Chinese and Indian prefolds are significantly more costly and with the amount of diapers we need for triplets it would be overwhelming to consider buying them; however, that being said, we used a diaper service for the first three months of our babies being home from the hospital. Of course they provided DSQ (diaper service “quality”) Chinese prefolds. Immediately after we switched over to these my husband asked what I thought. We both agreed that while these become soaked SO DID THE CHINESE PREFOLDS! I don’t know whose babies do not soak any cloth diapers, but our babies go through both types of cloth diapers with every feeding.

Maybe some people are not wanting to change as frequently as cloth diapers require, but coupled with plastic/vinyl overpants these work great for us. We change our babies every three to four hours, and we have no leaking and no diaper rash issues. At night we use a home-made insert as a doubler, and my understanding is that any cloth diapers require this at night. My babies make it through the entire night without leaking and no diaper changes until morning.

As one other person mentioned, I did pre-wash these diapers the typical recommended five to ten washes to prepare them for use. I also launder them on two cycles every two days, and I don’t have any of the pilling or rough problems others have described.

As an economical choice I think these diapers are functional as diapers, and as far as I can see they are not less useful that the DSQ diapers we used. We will continue to use these and purchase more as they wear, but for half the price or less than Chinese or Indian prefolds these are perfect for our triplet household. :) My husband and I were both cloth diaper babies, and I KNOW my mother did not buy Chinese or Indian prefolds to use. I was in this type of diaper until I potty-trained super early, and I never had diaper rash so I feel positive about this product.

BabyKicks Prefold Diaper 3-Pack, Small (newborn 11.75″ X 16″) Reviews

Review by : Love these they are so absorbent on my daughter and super soft. they do tend to pill over time, but I never cared about that really I bought them to absorb and thats what they do. they are thick, but not so much that they cause that bubble butt effect. I use these at night and have not had a leak yet, YEAH!!!!!! I have used all kinds of cloth diapers on my 6 children, AIOs, fitteds, prefolds, you name it I’ve tried it and these are my favorite. They have no waterproofing on them so they dry quickly in the dryer or on the line, they wash very well and would definately be able to be used on 2 or more children if cared for properly. One size of these will last a longer period of time on your little one, unlike the ones with elastic and velcro. In fact my daughter is now a skinny 21 months and 23lbs and we just started using the size mediums.

The only thing I did not like was of course the price, but I guess you get what you pay for and these are quality diapers. Save your money people and just start with these prefolds you’ll be glad you did. LOVE THEM MORE ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Review by G. Campos-Hensley: It was hard to convince my husband to try reusable diapers. These are the first diapers we have tried and he was impressed. I guess he assumed they would be tough to clean and the baby would make a mess all over the place. I liked them too, but I’m waiting to see what other types are like. These diapers hold urine and poop :) well though they do require a diaper cover. They are also bulky but we only use them round the house so it isn’t a big deal to us. It’s amazing how much money parents can save with reusable diapers and they have been updated so much from the past that they aren’t terrible like we have been lead to believe. The picture however is a little misleading. I thought they came with the snappi’s too. They didn’t. I should have read better. I ordered them later but using baby pins works just as well.
