Facts About Babies That You Might Not Know

by Silva Carvalho

Many people assume that babies are only about diapers, breast milk (or formula) and long naps. But do you know why babies move the way they do? Do you understand how babies develop? Many adults do not take the time to learn exactly how their children mature. Still others find the road from infancy to adulthood a mesmerizing one and learn everything they can about babies and their development.

Babies are never dull! Believe it or not the things you think you know about babies might be completely false! Here are some things that you might be interested in knowing about babies and how they develop.

This is why a baby will sometimes choose one toy instead of another. What this means is that all of the black and white stuff that you think of as ugly is actually better for your baby’s eyesight and brain development than the more traditional and popular pastel based decorations and toys.

Most babies are born knowing instinctually how to swim and how to hold their breath. The instinct fades rapidly. It is this instinct that makes some doctors believe water births are best. Apparently the transition from the womb to independent life is easier with a water birth because the babies have spent nine months “swimming” inside mommy’s womb. They believe the water helps them go from being completely dependent upon their mothers to being independent functioning creatures smoother than they do through traditional hospital births.

Teething is one of the things new parents dread the most. Don’t spend a lot of energy worrying about how your child’s teething schedule compares to other children. Each baby is different and develops at his or her own pace so, even though you might have had three kids who started teething at six months, that doesn’t mean that your newest baby will start at that time.

Consuming non mercury fish is incredibly healthy for you, but double check the type of fish you want to eat because doctors everywhere agree that you want to avoid mercury consumption while you are pregnant. Salmon is a fish that is highly recommended by doctors because it does not contain any mercury and it is full of vitamins and minerals that are good for you and your growing fetus. Some people believe that if you do not eat fish then your children will not have the same high levels of brain function or the same high skills for communication as those children born to women who did eat fish regularly while they are pregnant. This has not yet been proven beyond a doubt so if you do not eat fish, there is no need to panic.
