Drop Side Cribs Pose Danger to Infants and Toddlers

There is a move by Congress  to stop the sale of drop side cribs and it should be in place by 2011.  Meanwhile everyone should know that fixed side cribs, with sides that do not move up and down are safer than drop side cribs. 

An Associated Press story states that at least 32 children have died since 2000 in drop side crib accidents.  Millions of cribs have already been recalled over the past several years.

Updated Recalls on Baby Slings and Strollers

Recalled Baby SlingOne recent huge recall for Infantino Wendy Bellisimo slings and the SlingRider slings called attention to the fact that there are no mandatory standards for baby slings.  

This is taken from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) report on that recall with photos and details about the replacement program, and a warning for parents and caregivers to be very cautious with any baby slings used for infants less than four months old.

“The CPSC recommends that parents and caregivers make sure the infant’s face is not covered and is visible at all times to the sling’s wearer. If nursing the baby in a sling, change the baby’s position after feeding so the baby’s head is facing up and is clear of the sling and the mother’s body. Parents and caregivers should be vigilant about frequently checking their baby in a sling.”

Babies, Kids Under 5 and Pregnant Women are At High Risk from the Flu

High Risk for Swine FluThe Baby Center has a whole page of links related to the Swine Flu and children, babies and pregnancy.  I hate to be an alarmist, but I believe that the more you know, the more you can prepare.   We just had an outbreak here at our house, one of us was coughing, one had a high fever, another had stuffy nose, and another one was vomiting.  Put them all together and you’ve got swine flu symptoms.  Happily we are all better now.
